Abandon sagacity, discard wisdom, and the people benefit a hundredfold. Abandon benevolence, discard righteousness, and the people return to filial piety and compassion. Abandon cleverness, discard profit, and there will be no thieves or robbers. These three are not enough as cultural ornaments; therefore let the people have something to hold to: see the unadorned, embrace the uncarved wood, reduce selfishness, diminish desires.
