人之所恶，唯孤、寡、不谷，而王公以为称。故物或损之而益，或益之而损。
人之所教，我亦教之。强梁者不得其死，吾将以为教父。

Chapter 42 discusses the philosophical progression of creation: the Tao produces the One, which produces the Two, which produces the Three, which produces all things. Everything contains yin and embraces yang, and their interaction creates harmony. This chapter reveals that what people avoid—loss, loneliness, worthlessness—may actually be the very source of strength. Rulers use humble titles because they understand that what seems like loss can bring gain, and what seems like gain can bring loss.
