The Executioner's Role

民不畏死，奈何以死惧之？若使民常畏死，而为奇者，吾得执而杀之，孰敢？
常有司杀者杀。夫代司杀者杀，是谓代大匠斫。夫代大匠斫者，希有不伤其手矣。

Translation
If the people do not fear death, how can you threaten them with death? If the people always feared death, and those who act strangely could be caught and killed, who would dare? There is always the master executioner who kills. To replace the master executioner is like chopping wood for the master carpenter. Whoever replaces the master carpenter rarely avoids injuring their own hands.

This chapter warns against using fear and punishment to control others. Only the natural order (Heaven) should determine life and death; human interference leads to harm.

I sometimes try to control outcomes through force or fear, but this reminds me that such efforts backfire. I should respect the natural flow and not play judge.

Today, I will let go of trying to punish or control someone, trusting that consequences unfold naturally. I will step back from playing judge and allow life to do its work.
