Chapter 80 paints a vision of ideal simplicity—a small nation with few people where advanced tools remain unused because simplicity is preferred. The people value their lives so deeply they have no desire to travel far. Though technology and military capability exist, they are unnecessary. The sage-ruler allows people to return to primitive communication, finding contentment in simple food, beautiful clothing, peaceful homes, and joyful traditions. Neighbors live within sight and can hear each other's daily sounds, yet they live entire lives without needing to interact.

This chapter speaks to my longing for a life of sufficiency rather than constant growth and connectivity. I recognize the modern drive to expand, travel, and connect pulls me away from the simple contentment that this chapter celebrates. I see how my own desire to know and do more often creates restlessness rather than peace, and I long to find the profound richness that exists in smallness and simplicity.

Today I will intentionally simplify one aspect of my life—perhaps by turning away from screens, staying home rather than seeking entertainment elsewhere, or practicing contentment with what I already have.
