Chapter 40

Returning is the Movement of Tao

反者道之动,弱者道之用。天下万物生于有,有生于无。
Returning is the movement of Tao. Yielding is the function of Tao. All things under heaven are born of being; being is born of non-being.

Deep Reflection

What is this chapter about?

This chapter reveals the paradoxical nature of Tao, where true strength lies in flexibility and the origin of all existence springs from emptiness.

How does it relate to me?

It reminds me to embrace cycles of letting go and simplicity, trusting that less can lead to more in my life.

What should I do today?

Today, I will practice yielding—letting someone speak first, softening a fixed opinion, or conceding a point. I will notice how surrender feels like quiet strength, not weakness.
