Chapter 24

Tiptoeing Is Unstable

企者不立,跨者不行。自见者不明,自是者不彰,自伐者无功,自矜者不长。
其在道也,曰余食赘行。物或恶之,故有道者不处。
One who tiptoes cannot stand firm. One who strides cannot walk far. Self-displaying is not clear. Self-justifying is not shining. Self-asserting is not effective. Self-glorifying does not endure. In the Way, these are called 'excess food and useless growth.' Things may dislike them, so one who follows the Way avoids them.

Deep Reflection

What is this chapter about?

This chapter warns against arrogance, overreaching, and self-promotion, which undermine true stability and lasting success.

How does it relate to me?

I sometimes try too hard to impress others. This reminds me that humility and groundedness are more powerful than showy efforts.

What should I do today?

Today, I will do one task quietly without seeking recognition, focusing on the action itself. I will let my effort stand on its own, like a tree with deep roots.
